Last week, the LOVE+FLAIR team headed out to the cinemas to watch The Intern; a movie that revolves around a fashion e-commerce company called About the Fit, and stars Academy Award Winners Robert de Niro as Ben Whittaker, and Anne Hathaway as Jules Ostin, founder of About the Fit.
So okay, we admit, it was half team bonding, and half learning what the movie had to say about e-commerce. After 121 minutes of sitting down, hugging our popcorns, and hushed dialogues between coworkers, we came to a general consensus that it was a great watch. So, since we loved it so much we decided to sum up 10 Things We Learned From The Intern.
1. You’re never too old to start something new.
Ben is decades behind on technology, but hey, if you’re up for something new, it’s always possible. He starts out completely out of place in About the Fit, and ends up being well-versed with the company.
2. You’re never too high, or too low to do something.
Whether you’re a boss or a janitor, if something needs to be done, get it done. Jules shows us just this when she takes on the role of a customer service officer and states that a lot can be learned from talking to customers. In another scene, she visit the warehouse and teaches her employees on how to fold packages neatly.
3. Even the strong are vulnerable at times.
We all have a weak side and we all get tired. Even corporate leaders have doubts and fears that keeps them up at night. What’s important is to acknowledge those fears, talk it out, and move on.
4. Try to work for somebody that you admire.
We know, not everybody has the privilege to work for their role models, but if you have the chance, make it happen. Trust us, working with your role models are total game changers to see behind-the-scene processes of how your idols became the person they are today. You could even pick up a thing or two from seeing them everyday.
5. There’s nothing wrong with admitting that you’re wrong.
“Sorry seems to be the hardest word” We get it, it’s a direct jab to your ego to admit your mistakes. Admitting your mistake means acknowledging that you were wrong once, and probably won’t do it again. We absolutely love how big boss Jules goes searching for Ben and personally extends her apologies to him. #ROLEMODEL much?
6. Sometimes old school is good.
Take note boys: carry a handkerchief with you all the time.
7. Good bosses take time out to appreciate a job well done.
Even if that job includes your employees breaking into your mother’s house to steal her laptop.
8. Your loved ones will want what’s best for you.
Love gives; it doesn’t demand. We completely appreciate Matt, Jules’ husband, for wanting what’s best for his wife and not asking her to give up something that means the world to her.
9. Take time off work to relax and appreciate the little things in life.
Being overworked is going to get you burnt out, so take time out to relax when needed. Go to the park, watch a movie, play with your daughter, or even take up tai chi.
10. Never underestimate the power of a woman, or man, with big dreams.
Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook in his dormitory, Sophia Amoruso first launched an eBay store before it became Nasty Gal, and Steve Jobs was a college drop out before he became Apple’s CEO. A lot of the success stories we hear start with people who have nothing, so don’t be afraid and let your passion guide you to your destination.
Here are just some things that we loved about The Intern. What were your favorite moments from this movie?
